Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů now answers Jan Novák's letters better. He hopes that they are well in Konínice [i.e. Kníničky - the village where the Novák family moved]. BM has looked at Novák's "Ballets" - there is a spark in them, but JN makes too light of it, doesn't use the material and is already looking for new material, doesn't play with it and is sloppy. BM asks what JN is doing and what is missing from BM's library. He only has the double-concert once so he can't send it, but will send something else if JN wants it. BM wants to describe their new apartment. Is it in Brno or somewhere "by the devil"? Frank Rybka wrote that JN is happy now. BM doesn't know him like that. How do they do it when Eliska [Nováková] has to practice and take care of the children and JN has to compose? BM is trying to make up for his former weight. They can't go to town yet. They are both looking forward [with Charlotte Martinů] to Nice in March. JN shouldn't make light of his criticisms, but he shouldn't make light of composition either. Maybe that's the fashion in our country now? JN is to write news from the homeland.
