Content and physical description
ContentFratišek Bartoš drew Ivan Balla's attention to a serious injury suffered by Bohuslav Martinů last year in America, which has left the composer in financial distress. Further information on the composer's condition was to be provided by the Third Department. IB therefore invited Karel Novák, who gave him authentic information. BM had suffered an accident by falling on his head from a high terrace in the summer of 1946 during a university course in Berkshire. He had to be treated in a Berkshire hospital for several months afterwards. Although he is now at home, he is still unable to work, which puts him in financial hardship and thus unable to meet his medical bills. The $25 monthly allowance paid to him by the Department of Education was recently stopped - apparently because he was assigned to be a professor of composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. BM, however, is in no condition to take up the post. This report of the composer's condition is confirmed by BM's letter to the CN dated 6 December 1946, which indicates, among other things, that BM would be forced to sell his 5. SYMPHONY, to be premiered at the 1947 Prague Spring Festival by the Czech Philharmonic. In view of the above, the IB proposes that BM be given financial support in the form of an honorary gift from the President in recognition of his contribution to the Czechoslovak resistance in America.
