Content and physical description
ContentVáclav Holzknecht writes his statement regarding the bust of Bohuslav Martinů. He was invited to participate in the expert evaluation of two busts of BM together with the architect Řepa. The Art Fund commissioned the sculptor Marta Jirásková and Vlasta Prachatická. During the approval ceremony, which was attended by many art experts, VH was invited to comment on both designs. VH did not feel competent to speak about the artistic qualities, but MJ's work seemed to him idealized, not true enough, like a slick cliché. Whereas VP's portrait expresses a very intense psychological life in his face and is modern and engaging. The jury unanimously agreed on VP's proposal. Charlotte Martinů was not present at the approval, but she visited both sculptors and expressed her support for MJ's proposal. VH writes that CHM is a simple woman and her taste cannot be binding on the National Theatre. The personal relationship between MJ and the Martin family also plays a role here. VH does not consider CHM's opinion or procedure to be correct and believes that professional evaluation and recommendation should be insisted upon. MJ is not financially harmed, she receives a fee for her work.
