Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů writes that for three years he has been trying to get permission to lend orchestral material for the opera JULIETTE. He has negotiated with the embassy in Washington, which has promised to do so. Karel Šebánek (director of Orbis) also tried to mediate. BM writes that this work will not be given here [in Czechoslovakia] now, so he would like to use his work elsewhere in Europe. There is great interest in the work and he would need the materials which are lying idle in the archives. It would make it easier for BM to lend it, and if a work by a Czech author is played abroad, it is propaganda for Czechoslovakia. If so, he would be willing to purchase the material to have it in his possession. The publisher is Orbis (Melantrich), who would be interested in performing it, as the editorial fees would be sent to them in Prague, which means a good deal in currency as well. BM would be very grateful if he would write to him to tell him what to do about the whole thing and who to contact if necessary. He has a letter from his predecessor saying that the theatre is not now interested in performing the work and after various formalities the theatre would lend the material. On this advice, and on the advice of his friend Henry Honzl, he contacted Washington, but the whole thing got stuck somewhere. In the conclusion of his letter BM thanks him for his advice and asks for an early reply as he is leaving New York in a month.
