Content and physical description
ContentOn 16 March 1938 the premiere of Bohuslav Martinů's JULIETTE will take place at the National Theatre. The libretto was written after the play of the same name by the French poet Georges Neveux. BM is permanently staying in Paris, but through the director Jindřich Honzl he gave the impetus to invite the GN to this premiere. An invitation would go beyond the limits of the theatre's own tasks, and there are no budgetary means to do so. Therefore, the National Theatre is submitting an initiative to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to consider the presence of the GN at the premiere from the point of view of international cultural propaganda and to decide whether it can provide funds for the invitation and accordingly invite the GN to Prague. BM is also known to have approached the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on his own behalf to ask for adequate support to facilitate his presence at the PM. It is clear that the Ministry would not consider itself called upon, in the field of its own competence, to provide support for travel to and stay in Prague for the purpose of attending the premiere by a composer who is a Czechoslovak national residing permanently in Paris. Even the National Theatre is not able to cover from its own funds the travel costs of composers who are resident abroad, even though they are not usually Czechoslovak citizens. Even in the case of BM, the National Theatre will not make an exception, but is willing to provide the necessary advance against royalties. The theatre asks to be informed what position the Ministry has taken in this matter.
