Content and physical description
ContentThe Consulate of the Czechoslovak Republic in Cleveland writes about the premiere of Bohuslav Martinů's Symphony No.2 performed on 28 October by the Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Erich Leinsdorf. In the appendices he also sends clippings from the daily press. Clayton Fritchey of the Cleveland Press and Time magazine correspondent wrote an article, "Bohuslav Week," which was published in Time on November 9. Severance Hall, where the concert was held, was sold out both on opening night and on October 30, when SYMPHONY was repeated. It is also due to be broadcast on radio in early December. BM was present and enthusiastically received. He was called upon several times and received flowers in the national colours from the Czechoslovak Foreign Minister, from Cleveland compatriots and from Consul [Emanuel] Hajny. Minister [Jan] Masaryk sent a telegram of greetings to EL. The programme ended with [Bedřich] Smetana's Vltava. After the premiere a reception was held for BM, his wife and many other personalities of the cultural world. SYMPHONY, dedicated to Cleveland compatriots, will be performed further in Moscow, London and Mexico. BM arrived in Cleveland on October 25 to be present at the rehearsals. On October 26 and 27, the EH Consul organized a luncheon attended by about 30 prominent people from the music world, not only from Cleveland. A list of them follows.
