Content and physical description
ContentThe head of the Czechoslovak Information Office in New York [Ján] Papánek writes to the Czechoslovak Embassy in Washington regarding Bohuslav Martinů's participation in the Prague Festival [Prague Spring 1946]. The letter is number 3008/46. In the introduction, JP mentions a letter dated 26 April 1946, which was referred to the Information Service by the Consulate General for processing. Čs. The Information Service spoke again with BM and found that BM would most likely not attend the festival. The reason given for this was the late receipt of the invitation, whereupon BM was unable to complete all the formalities of departure in time, as he had first to apply for an immigration passport which would have allowed him to return to New York without complications after his visit to Europe. Although the change of visa has been granted by the Consul General in Montreal, the passport has not yet arrived back from Canada, so BM cannot apply for a re-entry permit. Čs. Information Service provided support to BM in an effort to expedite the process. BM has also started composing the FIFTH SYMPHONY, fearing that the trip would distract him too much from his work and that he would not be able to make the whole festival anyway. BM needs to be back in New York in mid-June to review students and is scheduled to attend a composition course in Tanglewood, New Hampshire starting July 1. BM promised to give the Embassy a reply today. CS. Information Service therefore requests the Embassy to inform Minister [Jan] Masaryk of the result.
