Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů is applying to the Czech Academy of Sciences, Literature and Arts for a travel grant on the basis of his work, which is attached. BM wanted to attempt a new kind of melodrama, where the form of the composition would not be shackled by the dramatic detail of the text and the mood of the poems would come through more powerfully. THREE MELODRAMS (THE BAG, THE EVENING, DANCERS FROM THE DEVIL) will be performed later this season at a concert by the College Audience Music Union. The piano pieces from the cycle Melancholic Songs [?] will be published in the autumn by the Mojmír Urbánek Music Publishing House [unpublished]. If BM were awarded the scholarship, he would use it to travel to Paris, where he has long intended to go. On the cover page of the letter it is written that the letter is submitted by Karel Stecker.
