Content and physical description
ContentAccording to what Bohuslav Martinů wrote about Princeton University, Karel Boleslav Jirák assumes that BM did not accept a professorship in Prague. The KBJ has reports of how in the Czechoslovakia, listeners decided on composers and professors, forbidding the writing of symphonies and sonatas and prescribing vocal and programmatic works. [Boleslav] Vomáčka announces a cantata with a procession of harmonicas. How would that fit BM? KBJ congratulates on the Chicago success of CONCERT FOR TWO PIANOES and on the performance of the new SMITH QUARTET he read about in Svornost. KBJ begins composing again, and it will be a 5th symphony (he is an incorrigible "formalist"). KBJ asks BM if and how he is paid royalties from CSR for performances and published works. Is BM a member of the Composers Syndicate or the League of Composers? KBJ has not yet received any royalties. He needs the money in CSR for payments there. Did BM receive the magazine that KBJ sent him? [Rudolf] Firkušný is to write when he will be in Chicago. KBJ is already in written contact with [Jan] Löwenbach.
