Content and physical description
ContentDilia's internal report on JULIET and SPALICE, relating to negotiations with Boosey & Hawkes.
A piano extract for JULIET was published in Melantrich. The score belonged to Bohuslav Martinů. The National Theatre copied the material and it was sent to the composer for overseas performance, according to archivist Rudolf Komorous. It had already been sent under the directorship of Ladislav Bohac via the Czechoslovak Embassy in Washington, but was not returned. The opera was not a success in the Czechoslovakia, although it was conducted by Václav Talich. There were about 6 performances. B&H apparently have the score and material. Melantrich lost the contract. On what basis to deal with B&H? Dilia can't promise material, he has nothing to copy it from. Only the piano excerpt is contractually covered.
According to Karel Šebánek, the definitive score of ŠPALÍČK is with BM's relatives. KS would be willing to negotiate a loan with them. It would be possible to lean on the piano lift and materials and propose to B&H to provide all materials in exchange for royalties and rental fees after commission deduction. Perhaps this could be done if Dilia would give up JULIETTA - it will not be successful in "people's democratic" countries.
The addressee has to decide how to handle the situation.
