Content and physical description
ContentArthur Tillman Merritt informs recipients of a Symposium on Music Criticism to be held May 1-3, 1947 at the Department of Music, Harvard University. The Symposium will also include three concerts of works composed by well-known composers for this purpose. The first concert will be of chamber music, and they have commissioned string quartets by Walter Piston and Bohuslav Martinů, and a string trio by Arnold Schoenberg, which has already been completed.
After some consideration, they offer the Walden String Quartet to perform at this concert, which Piston has told Merritt would be interested.
The Schoenberg Trio is finished, and as it will certainly be the most challenging piece, they will be sending out the written material to the addressees very soon. Piston and Martinu are to submit the pieces by mid-February [1947], but he hopes to do so sooner. ATM undertakes that the addressees will receive the itemized material shortly after March 1, 1947.
ATM will appreciate an early response to its offer.
