ContentCharlotta Martinů replies to Zdeněk Pechold's letter of 23 October 1970. She was disappointed that nothing had yet been agreed on the copy of the score of JULIETTA, it was an urgent matter.
In his letter of 1 June 1970, ZP informed Charlotte that he was in contact with the New York branch of Boosey & Hawkes, which was interested in performing JULIETTA in the USA in the 1970/1971 season. ChM had heard in Paris in June 1970 of a planned performance of the opera at Covent Garden in London [Royal Opera House]. ZP knows better than she does who to contact.
ChM wrote to Walter Schmolk on 22 September 1970. (She also wrote to Pechold on the same day.) WS replied to her on 28 Sep: he reportedly informed Pechold that he had several typescript copies of the English translation and a piano extract with the English text hand-typed. This is the only copy that WS has, one copy is already lost, so WS can only send a photocopy. Before WS has the photocopies made (an expensive affair), he asks Dilia to confirm his 1959 translation rights.
Didn't ZP receive a letter from WS dated 22 Sep [?] asking for payment for the copy of the piano lift? ChM is annoyed at Dilia's failure to inform her.
ChM has had bronchitis since 1 Oct. She has asked Anna Spacek to phone Dilia to expedite negotiations. ChM could have made a financial contribution to Dilia for a photocopy of the piano lift, but she does not know the amount she has on deposit with Dilia.
Dilia told Schmolko that it would renew the contract only on the condition that its rights to the English translation were not exclusive. They wrote to Charlotte on 5 May 1961. She is in agreement with this. But now the material must be procured; it must be reproduced by hand, which will be time-consuming.
ChM wonders if this work will ever be started. ZP is to inform Schmolka immediately about the photocopy.
