Content and physical description
ContentThe music department writes for the theatre department of Dilia. The question of the arrangements for the French translation of JULIETTA's libretto has not been resolved, although it was discussed at the end of 1965 (in the presence of Charlotte Martinů) and on 18 February 1966 (at the Education and Culture Club, in the presence of Ida de Vries, Jarmil Burghauser, Zdeněk Pechold and the sender).
In the music department [Dilie] is a piano extract with a partially inscribed French translation. This was sent by Dilia to Georges Neveux on 15 June 1965 at the behest of the director [Josef Kalas] at the instigation of Miloš Šafránek.
It is necessary either to provide a satisfactory French translation or to abandon the plan and thus jeopardize the work's release in France. It is necessary to make a decision quickly; entering the translation into the piano lifts is time-consuming.
The writer has discussed the matter with Jarmil Burghauser, as he mentioned at a meeting in the theatre department on 31 March 1966. Given the peculiarity of the case (Bohuslav Martinů's Czech libretto, based on a GN draft, is to be back-translated into French), JB recommended that the task be entrusted to GN; perhaps Charlotte Martinů could help in this. As Neveux's partner he recommended Vladimír Štěpánek, who would advise on declamation. Details of cooperation would have to be arranged. JB thought it risky to entrust the task to local translators.
