Content and physical description
ContentMiloslav Bureš hopes that Zdeněk Zouhar has already received the sheet music [OPENING STUDENTS] that Karel Šebánek sent him in the middle of the week. He does not wish the correspondence between Bureš and Bohuslav Martinů to be quoted in the description of the genesis of the composition. He summarises his impression as follows: he came from the same town with BM and had met him as a student when he came home from Paris. He dedicated his second book of lyrics "The Bride" to BM. The latter wanted verses about the Highlands from him for setting to music, and only handed him "verses ripe for his music" 25 years later. The motif of "The Well" is a personification of BM's home and of Bures and the Highlands. BM sent the text to Nice at the end of June [1955], after Jaroslav Seifert had read the work in manuscript. BM replied within a few days that the verses evoked many dear memories in him. BM had once met Vítězslava Kapralová at Three Wells and Sykovec, and Bures had experienced young love there with Zdeňka Entnerová. Already at the end of July BM sent the score and dedicated the whole work to Bureš. In a letter to BM, he suggested that "Brno should give the world premiere before other cities in Polička" on his 65th birthday.
Bureš goes on to summarize his own short biography.
He informs Zouhar of Václav Černý's afterword to the book edition of Studanek, and may have the publisher send Zouhar a copy of the afterword.
Bureš had a visit from television today; they may come to film the Polička premiere of the work. A colour film directed by Jiří Trnka is also being considered, which BM is excited about and is arranging permission from his publisher. Šebánek will visit Bures tomorrow. Zouhar is to choose what he needs from the letter; occasionally Bures will let Zouhar read his correspondence with BM.
