Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů responds to a letter asking about Alfred de Musset's play Lorenzaccio. He doesn't have time to go and see it, but he thinks it's an ordinary drama with incidental music because it's being performed at the Comédie-Française. He doesn't think it would be interesting for Jaroslav Vogel. BM read reserved reviews of it, the reviews from Monte Carlo were rather dismissive. BM finished a full-length comic opera [THE SOLDIER AND THE DANCER] and commissioned it for Brno. It will be performed probably next February (March). It is treated somewhat like a modern revue, scenically very rewarding, not requiring a large circulation, with a small orchestra. A really jolly theatrical thing. If JV is interested, he should go to [Karel] Šolc in Prague, who does the piano lift and has the score with him, or he should inquire with Dr. [Jan] Löwenbach. BM thinks the JV would be good, it's melodic, not too heavy and the singers really sing in it. He would be happy to have it performed in Pilsen, but JV would have to let him know in advance to give him the disposition. The score could be available in November.
