Content and physical description
ContentCharlotte Martinů has already returned and talked about the success of Karel Novák in Paris [the Czech Philharmonic tour] and the health of Rafael Kubelík. He wants to give the Czech Philharmonic the premiere of his 5th Symphony for performance at the Prague Spring Festival. Originally he intended to write a new piano concerto for them and Rudolf Firkušný, but due to his convalescence after an accident he had to postpone it. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs [of the Czechoslovak Foreign Ministry?] has suspended BM's financial support [according to BM, a "minuscule" amount, intended monthly for emigrants from the Czechoslovak Republic in the USA] and BM needs to pay doctors and cannot compose much. Therefore he demands a financial reward for the premiere. If he and BM can come to an agreement, he suggests, because of his busy schedule, that they make copies of the operating material themselves using transparency paper and copies of it. The appointment [as professor of composition at the Prague Conservatory] has come, but since Jaroslav Řídký and František Pícha have also received it, BM does not feel too honoured. Now he cannot travel because of an injury. Václav Holzknecht is to write with details of a place at the Conservatoire. Jan Löwenbach is to arrange for a letter regarding BM to be sent from the Authors' Association (OSA) to ASCAP.
