Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů is looking forward to the symposium and hopes to be able to come to Boston. He thinks they will be able to stay with friends from the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Arthur Tillman Merritt is to ask Walter Piston to make corrections to the score for the tempo indications. He first used an electric metronome, then found that the readings did not match the MM, all wrong. The correct readings are: 1st movement: quarter = 108 (104) MM, 2nd movement: eighth = 120 MM, 3rd movement: quarter = 92 MM, and Allegro con brio: half = 120 MM.

Dear Mr. Merritt,

I am looking forward to the Symposium concerts and I hope, we will be able to come to Boston. Please make a arrangement for us. I think we can stay with our friends from Boston Symphony.

Thank you for the check.

Would you be so kind and ask Mr. Piston to make a corrections dans le score and partes, to correct the metronomic indications. I used for the first time the electric metronome and now, I see that it doesnot concord with Maelzel metronome. it is all wrong.

The correct indications are:

I. First movement            Maelzel M.         Q=108(104)

II. Second Movement     “            “             E=120

III. Last mev                      “             “        Q=92

and Allegro con brio, page 35.                   H=120

Thank you, I am with my best regards

yours

B. Martinu
