| Content | Thanks for the letter and for the good news about the interest of the director and Mjosin [Leonide Massine]; would like the event to be a success; writes to Brno to send him [the addressee] the piano extracts of "The Legend of St. Dorothy" and "The Wedding Shirt" (Eleonora), which he considers most interesting from the point of view of ballet; sends his piano things for inspection; would like [the addressee] to be able to see them in N.Y. to call the attention of the director or manager to inquire about him [Martinů] with Koussevitzky, or the Boston orchestra, or even the critics, who will remember "LA BAGARRE," which was enthusiastically received, and had, by the way, the 1st performance ever there;
He also asks that it be brought to his attention that BM received the 1st prize "Prize Coolidge" at the audition the year before last; BM believes that he is quite well known in local musical circles and that the director (or manager) will receive good information about him; most of BM's compositions (chamber and orch.) have been performed in America; as for the Czech text, he asks [the addressee] to explain partly the content and to point out to them that the excerpt is not for the press but for the use of the ballet hall, i.e. BM thinks that Massine would have made the Legend of Dorothy a 'cabinet piece', the orchestra is small, rather chamber, the works are written with the possibilities of theatre and ballet in this country in mind, he himself would prefer to work with the Russian Ballet on a completely new work, which he would eventually like to see. He thanks Massine himself for his help and asks that [the addressee] "not let it out of his hand"; he himself is fully at the Russian Ballet's disposal and would be happy to see the project realised;
He also asks to be notified of the "PLAYS ABOUT MARY" which represent a new form of opera; the premiere in Brno will be in January; he is going to Prague where he will stay for about 2 months; in March he will either still be in Czechoslovakia or already in Paris; he asks recomando to return the things BM sent him for inspection to M. Safranek in Paris, which he encloses; he asks for news to be communicated to Prague to J. Zrzavy (enclosed).
