Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů is not sure whether he answered the last letter regarding the modification of the cell part [SONATAS No. 3]: 'I will be glad if you modify the slides and possibly some clumsiness for the cell technique. I remember that we found some mistakes in the performance in Washington, but I don't have the copy and can't find it now, (perhaps p. 28 bar 92?) somewhere in those passages there is an uncomfortable bar for the cello, I'm sure you can find it. But what I'd most like you to do about bowing and phrasing is to be more careful about long bowings. There is a tendency now with cellists (as you may have observed in Sonata II) to play each note on one bow in order to have more tone, which of course loses the phrasing. So watch out for that.
The cellist who arranged the part in Sonata No. 2 had a short arm and so he rather chopped the whole thing up. Unfortunately, I discovered it too late." Have a nice holiday.
