ContentB. Martinů confirms that he has received the score [CONCERT FOR VIOLONCELLO AND ORCHESTRA No. 1] and expresses his deep disappointment at the way in which he has carried out the orchestration. He notes that 1939 was not a good year for composition.
He is going to rework the score, and notes that he will do so for peace of mind, as he is very fond of the work in question - he says that he wishes the work to be given a proper final form.
BM intends to neglect the orchestra so that the solo part is given a completely free rein. He also assures P. Fournier that the work will remain dedicated to him.
BM will be forced to make changes, also in the cello part, which he would like to discuss with PF in person in September.
BM is confident that the piece is able to continue to feature in the cello repertoire, but not under the current situation; everything needs to be definitely adjusted.
