Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů announces to Paul and Maja Sacher that he has completed the EPOS ON GILGAMES. He sends them the score in three large volumes. He gladly dedicates the piece to Maje.
He apologizes for the music paper and binding.
PS has to refine the tempi as BM only had an old and unreliable metronome. PS then knows the correct tempo by the chorus. BM does not want the phrases to be static, so additional tempo markings (accelerando, ritardando, etc.) need to be added to the score. BM will have some more questions for PS. When PS has determined everything, BM will put it in the manuscript.
BM doesn't know how the material is. He thinks it will be produced by Boosey & Hawkes publishers.
Hopefully PS won't be too dismayed by the size of the score or the music.
The fabric is truly tragic. The text could be sung in English, but there are many archaisms, as Reginald Campbell Thompson has tried to preserve the archaic style, and it is difficult to sing. BM has retained these expressions, but it would be possible to replace them with more modern equivalents.
He will be pleased if the addressees like the piece. It is somewhat different from his other works.
He and Charlotte Martinů salute the addressees.
