Content and physical description
ContentPaul Sacher thanks Bohuslav Martinů for his letter from Lisbon of 9 March and from New York of 9 April [6 April, see Sac 1941-04-06]. He is glad that BM and [Charlotta Martinů] arrived safely in New York, that they have good friends there and BM is respected there.
It was impossible to send anything to Amicia Quennehen [ChM's mother] in Vieux Moulin as BM requested in his letter from Lisbon. Nothing would go into the occupied zone. BM is to contact the Red Cross. Does BM have news of Caroline Martin and Marie Martin?
PS regrets not being able to write sooner. Didn't know what address to send the letter to. Correspondence between Europe and America is lengthy.
PS is glad that BM will write a concerto for violin [CONCERTO DA CAMERA] as PS wished. He hopes that by the time BM reads this letter the work will be well advanced. BM is to contact Victor Nef, the Swiss consul. He might allow the composer to send the score of CONCERTA DA CAMERA to Bern by diplomatic pouch. The political department in Bern could then, on his instructions, deliver the parcel to Sacher.
PS would be particularly pleased to have the piece available for the next season. He would have the material made in Switzerland. He won't prevent the work from being performed in America right away. He himself is planning a premiere for January 23, 1942. BM, however, is to send the score early just in case. Where should PS send payment to the addressee? He would prefer an American bank.
