Content and physical description
ContentThree weeks have passed since the last letter Bohuslav Martinů sent to Paul and Maja Sacher from Paris. In light of the tragic events, he wonders whether the Sachers are still in Schönenberg. BM [and Charlotte Martinů], after long vicissitudes, resorted to Charles Munch. All the friends have scattered to parts unknown. Hopefully at least this letter will arrive safely, contacts with Switzerland should be restored.
BM's only option is to flee to America. He mentions what he has already done to do so, and the difficulties that probably await him. He asks the PS for financial assistance in case he succeeds in obtaining an exit permit; his own savings will not be sufficient. He asks for an advance on the cantata [?] which the PS wanted to commission from him, or for a loan.
Do not PS and MS also intend to travel?
BM and Charlotte left Paris at the last minute on 10 June, unable to take anything with them, and their luggage is probably lost, as are most of the author's manuscripts. They are now in a small village [Rancon, see ID 2853] where they have found simple accommodation with the help of Charles Munch.
They will probably travel further that same week: the violinist Colette Frantz has invited them to stay with her in Cauterets, so they will be closer to the border. BM gives her address.
Does PS think it would be easier to get a visa to America in Switzerland?
BM encloses a letter to Polka.
