Content and physical description
Content The writer thanks the recipient for the letter and for the trust placed in him;
- he is very happy to write the concerto which the addressee asks him to write; the combination for two violins and orchestra offers numerous possibilities;
- accepts in principle the addressee's proposal ;
- the writer's terms : 4000 fr. for the work ... adds that it is rather the equivalent of what he would otherwise have received for the work he will be forced to give up for this commission - as they want to give the concerto in February, he will have to devote himself exclusively to this ;
- he will not be able to hand in the score until 15 December at the latest, and they will therefore have two more months to rehearse the piece and prepare the material for the orchestra;
- asks whether it is valid that the piece should be in three movements of 12-15 minutes duration, both violins very concertante ;
- asks which orchestra the addressee has at his disposal ;
- the writer asks a few more 'subsidiary questions': would a small orchestra not be the best choice... If a piano can also be cast... The question of the ease of the score for the orchestra - for the sake of rehearsal... The question of the title...
- If the addressee accepts the writer's conditions, he can immediately include the concert in the programme...
