About the composition

The song What a Nice Time (Jak milý čas, H 106) was written in Polička at the beginning of 1917 and was dedicated to Gabriela Čechová (Mrs Beli), the wife of an evangelical priest from Borová. This lyrical composition with a simple, folk-sounding character is inspired by the Irish ballad “How dear to me the hour when daylight dies” by Thomas Moore (1779–1852) and portrays a romantic atmosphere on the shore of a lake at dusk.

The recording of the composition was released for the first time by Naxos in 2011 (Martinů: Songs, Vol. 1 – A Wreath of Carnations; Jana Wallingerová, Giorgio Koukl).
