The Intermezzo falls into the category of didactic music for violin. This work comprises four character pieces in which the pupil is to be accompanied by his or her teacher on the piano. In these pieces, and in the last one in particular, Martinů returns again to his fondness for exploring new rhythmic complications. He still takes care, however, to produce quality music that is easily manageable for the player.
