About the composition

The song I Know a Grove (Vím hájíček zelený, H 273) has an occasional character. This small musical composition on a text from Sušil's collection Moravské národní písně s nápěvy do textu vřaděnými (Marie and Elisabeth) was written at the beginning of 1939 as a birthday present for Vítězslava Kapralová's mother. The composition is inscribed and dated. After three short verses Martinů added a parlando afterword: "And whoever sings this song three times in the morning before he has breakfast, to him God forgives sins", the text of which also comes from Sušil's collection. At the end of the piece Martinů adds text: “And all sincere wishes”.
