About the composition

Composition for Little Evas (Skladba pro malé Evy, H 242) from 1935, is an example of the many short occasional piano pieces (album leaves) that represent a sizable part of Martinů's piano output. Martinů dedicated it to Svatava Michalová, daughter of the Czech painter, graphic artist and editor of the magazine Eva, Vojtěch Michal.

The small, instructive composition was first published by Melantrich in the music supplement of magazine Eva on 1 March 1935 (vol. 7, no. 9) under the title “Skladby dětem” [Compositions for the Children]. Here it was published together with Bohumír Hrachovina's 'Ukolébavka' [Lullaby] and Jaroslav Křička's ‘Evina Ukolébavka’ [Eva’s Lullaby].
