About the composition

Christmas, [Vánoce] H 167, a three-part piano cycle, was actually written during the Christmas holidays in Paris in 1927. It is dedicated to Anna Špačková. She and her husband JUDr. Jaromír Špaček, who was employed at the Czechoslovak embassy in France, supported the Martinůs, especially in their first hard years in Paris. The Špačeks were long-standing friends of Charlotte and Bohuslav Martinů, which is also confirmed by the composer’s letter to the family from 29 March 1913, regarding their participation in the Martinů’s wedding [...].

Christmas was published by Urbánek in 1931. The title page of the autograph manuscript gives the title in Czech, the printed edition adds the French version Le Noël.
