CommentsThe rough short-score draft D of the Symphony No. IV was formerly a homogenous source that was likely split into four parts sometime after Martinů's death. The third section is now missing. The draft is divided only roughly by movement; the end of the first movement is in D2 and both the end of the second movement and beginning of the fourth were probably included in [D3] and thus are now lost. On the upper edge of the first page of D1 Martinů wrote "na velký pátek" ("on Good Friday", i.e. 30 March 1945) which certainly indicates when he began to draft the Symphony. Each of the three known parts consist of a single continuous folio (four pages with notation) written in lead pencil and black ink. The first part of the draft D1 contains the first movement of the Symphony No. IV up to the end of the development (fig. 12). The initial idea for the opening of the Symphony was crossed out.
