Content and physical description
ContentErick Hawkins informs Robert Fitzgerald about the premiere of the ballet STRANGLER. He regrets that RF could not attend. Thanks for the telegram. They had to postpone the performance twice due to lack of rehearsals by the orchestra and finally only performed it once on Sunday afternoon. In the meantime EH had got a new chorus leader, Joseph Wiseman. He may not be a musician and didn't follow Martin's score as well as they would have liked, but he did a great job. The actress Anne Meacham was also good, though not as vocally equipped as Marian Seldes, with whom they read Martinů. Everyone is impressed with Fitzgerald's text. Not everyone understood it, but that's okay. EH hurt his leg before the performance and then again on opening night, but he'll be fine. EH still has to rework some parts before the New York production. Martinů did a great job. BM gave EH the finished score (blueprint), so EH couldn't tell him about some movements RF didn't want to cut. Hopefully RF will understand that these were edits in the name of performance. EH also took Martha Graham's advice and crossed out the dance ending. If RF publishes the text, he should mention that the text is based on EH's idea. EH has the idea of publishing Fitzgerald's text, complete with photos of the performance and excerpts from Martin's manuscript.
