Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů apologises for writing to František Daneš directly, but the situation forces him to do so. He writes that he has no intention of seeking the support of the Ministry [of Education and National Enlightenment of the Czechoslovak Republic]. He remembers that when he first came to see [Ferdinand] Špíšek five years ago, it cost him a great deal of time and effort to negotiate with the Ministry, even though he had presented a 'completely substantive' plan. BM writes that he can of course make a living without the support of the ministry, but he regrets giving up the possibility of cooperation that would certainly benefit Czech music. BM considers himself to be a very productive and internationally successful composer with extremely low financial demands (compared to other composers and to other Ministry expenditures on the promotion and development of Czech music) and with this letter he is trying to get the Ministry to provide him with funding, albeit modest.
