Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů is moved by the tragic death of [Jan] Masaryk. Jan Novák is in "New Europe" [after the communist coup at the end of February 1948]. BM's arrival at the [Prague Spring] Festival and his apartment in Prague are out of the question. The events did not add to his health, which was already not quite right. BM regrets that he will not continue the work he has begun with JN. An artist must never lose heart, no matter what happens, and the battle is not won in one composition or one year. BM sends JN a certificate that JN has studied with him. Many people here have asked about JN, he left a good impression, maybe JN will return to the US. BM will be glad for news of JN's compositions. BM sends greetings from "Mrs. Ro." [Rosalie Barstow?] and says hello to JN's girlfriend [Eliska Novakova].
