Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů writes to Jan Novák that he cannot invite him to the American Academy in Rome because in the present situation he would make life difficult for JN and himself. BM has to write in hints in case the letter is read by a stranger. It's not as easy as they imagine. They have appropriated BM and have the idea that he belongs to them [BM already had US citizenship by this time]. BM now often writes someone to come see him, but he is in an American place and cannot invite members of the CSR. JN also cannot live with the Martins for the same reason. JN has to find his speech on his own. BM would have told him in person. BM gets the impression from Novak's Hobo Concert that he is making it too easy for himself. A few months ago JN could still have come, but now the situation is different and BM regrets that he cannot help him.
