Content and physical description
ContentThe letter sent to Bohuslav Martinů both pleased and saddened him. All his memories came back to him. He said goodbye to Vitulka [Kaprálová] soon after her marriage to [Jiří] Mucha. JM had to leave after the marriage because he was a soldier. VK began to complain [of pain] and so BM took her to Dr [Josef] Brumlik who sent her to hospital where she was then seen. He and JM decided to send her to Montpellier because all the good doctors from Paris had been mobilized. VK had been in pain for a year. After her departure to Montpellier he did not see her again. He still received letters from her, but it was clear that her situation had deteriorated. They [he and Charlotte] left Paris in great chaos. But he was glad that Vera [Uhlířová] and JM were with her. He learned of her death only later from [Rudolf] Firkušný. In Marseille he then organised a collection for her grave. Perhaps [Miloslava] Sísová and [Viktor] Kripner could give him more information. JM wrote that all her belongings were saved in Paris. BM therefore asked JM to send the Military Symphony of VK, which is of interest. [...] It will be necessary to contact the office in Montpellier. According to JB, it was probably stomach cancer. I'm sure BM will write an article for the memorial. BM won't get to Prague until March. He has been asked to accept a place at the [Prague Conservatoire's] master's school.
