| Content | Reflections and notes by Bohuslav Martinů, part of a notebook from New York 1945. BM discusses the interpretation of the works, analyses Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, talks about the limited possibilities of objective analysis of the work, about spontaneity and the process of creation, about the craft aspect (which he considers equally important, although it is often understood pejoratively) and the inspirational, intuitive and psychological aspects. He argues from his own experience and practice. He reflects on the relationship between music and religion, and discusses the decline of religion in the face of the horrors of the 20th century. Addresses general issues of contemporary music criticism, performance and reception (listeners become critics, struggling to understand the piece analytically and missing the emotional impact of the work). French and English words and passages are frequent in the text. |
