Content and physical description
ContentA group of faculty members at the University of Michigan are eager to set up a fund which may be used for the commissioning of chamber music works to be composed and first presented at the University. They would like to launch the project this year and are anxious to obtain one or two works for this first season from highly distinguished figures in American music. Gilbert Ross asks Bohuslav Martinů if he currently works on a string quartet, a piano quartet, or a piano quintet, or if he would consider the writing of such a piece on direct commission from the University. He is specifying conditions and circumstances of the possible commission, among others the time limitation - the premiere of the work would take place at the University of Michigan Chamber Music Series during July 1949. He also mentions that they are not certain of the extent of the funds that they will have available for such commissioning and he asks Martinů roughly what kind of fee he would require for such a project.
