| Content | Bohuslav Martinů asks Karel Novák about the situation in Czechoslovakia, if he can write him a letter. Concerning the CLASSICAL CONCERT [No. 3], it seems that the performance at the Prague Spring Festival will not take place, [Rudolf] Firkušný is not in New York. BM telephoned [?] Bichurin, but BM does not understand why someone from the Czech Philharmonic did not call him directly. BM's return is delayed again, although BM was almost ready. BM is getting tired of the work, he only finished the CLAVIERNE CONCERT because it was for Firkušný, he thought it would be nice if they were on stage together. The excitement of [Jan] Masaryk's death worsened BM's health. He was also upset that the unnamed man had returned to his former position, and so BM began to think about the whole thing again. His doctor also forbade him to travel because of "certain circumstances" [the coup in the Czechoslovakia]. KN is to write everything he can. What about [Miloš] Šafránek? BM heard that "Dr. L." [name intentionally not given] is in Switzerland and false reports that Firkušný has been expelled and also [Václav] Talich that he is no longer in the [National] Theatre. BM asks about his position in the [Czech] Philharmonic. If necessary, BM can send a parcel if it doesn't work, or fabric for Mila [Bohumila Nováková] for a cloak. BM tried to send cigarettes to [Miloš] Vlašimský, but with the customs duty, it is not worth it. If KN has something against BM, let him write it, it's better that way, at least people understand each other. |
