Content and physical description
ContentThe writer must have arranged something else with Bohuslav Martinů. BM had clear ideas which he had to respect. In principle, however, he achieved what Vojtěch Strnad cared about.
He encloses a draft contract [for MIRANDOLINA]. Any correspondence is to be addressed by VS to the writer, not to BM, since the composer has assigned rights to the writer and authorised him to act in this matter.
The question of charging for the material has been left open by the writer; the terms cannot yet be estimated. It depends, on the one hand, on whether the parts from VS would be usable by the writer, and on Strnad's need for a piano lift or possibly parts that the writer would have to create.
There remains the question of the premiere fee. In the NSR ["bei uns"] it is common for a premiere of a work by even an average, but especially an above-average, composer to be paid an increased amount by the operating theatre, which often covers a significant part of the cost of the material to the publisher. Perhaps VS too can negotiate favourable terms.
The writer is confident that he will come to an agreement with VS in due course.
Under the impression of the performance of [Antonín Dvořák's] Rusalka, he wrote a small poem. He is particularly fond of this opera. He encloses the poem with this letter.
Meanwhile BM has sent Strnad a second score with the singing voices written out.
