Content and physical description
ContentJ. M. Knapp told R. D. Welch that last Thursday there was a misunderstanding between him and Bohuslav Martinů concerning the proprieties of his employment at Princeton University this year. RDW will attempt to clarify the situation by this letter. For the past two years, BM has always had two courses and a salary of $6000 at the university. This year he will be teaching only one course at half salary, which is proportionately more than many full professors are paid. RDW is referring to last year when they were hesitant to open BM's courses due to lack of students. He further explains that normally all students registered in a course are entitled to 3 hours per week regardless of the number of students enrolled. Only exceptionally are individual lessons provided. He is of course aware that BM's courses should include as many individual lessons as possible, especially when BM himself prefers it. BM should not feel obliged to provide more than 3 hours of tuition per week in any one course unless he chooses to do so himself, but on the other hand 3 hours are guaranteed by the University to each student. RDW hopes that BM will allow each student to hear critiques of individual work and that everyone will have the opportunity to see them at work on assignments they bring in themselves. RDW believes that if this method suits BM, it will also satisfy the students and individual lessons will not suffer too much. If BM wants to talk to him, they can meet next Thursday.
